Pakistan and Children Impacted by Armed Conflict: A Call for Action

The United Nations Security Council recently held its annual open debate on the six grave violations against children in situations on the agenda, with a focus on the devastating impact of armed conflict on children. The event brought together over 70 speakers to outline urgent actions needed to end child recruitment and use, killing and maiming, abductions, rape and other forms of sexual violence, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access.

One powerful voice among the many was Patrick Kumi, founder of the community-based organization Similar Ground. Speaking from personal experience, Kumi emphasized the need for the Security Council to include 'people like me' in its decision-making processes. He recounted his own harrowing story of abduction and torture by an armed group in South Sudan, where he witnessed his father's murder.

Kumi's message was clear: while he is grateful for the opportunity to speak out against the atrocities committed against children, one voice per year is not enough. There are thousands of children currently going through similar experiences, and it is imperative that the Security Council takes concrete actions to protect them.

The Secretary-General's latest report (document A/76/871-S/2022/493) laid bare the shocking crimes committed against children in armed conflicts around the world. The report highlighted the urgent need for the international community to come together and take collective action to prevent the use of child soldiers, protect schools and hospitals from attack, and ensure humanitarian access to those affected by conflict.

As the Security Council continues to grapple with these critical issues, it is essential that it prioritizes the safety and well-being of children. This includes enforcing existing resolutions, providing support to organizations working on the ground to help children recover from trauma, and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

The international community cannot afford to ignore the devastating impact of armed conflict on children. It is time for collective action, and it is imperative that the Security Council listens to the voices of those affected by these conflicts. By doing so, we can work towards a future where no child is forced to endure the horrors of war and violence.
